1. The Vision Behind the Championship

Solving crossword puzzles as an intellectual pursuit has spanned centuries, challenging minds worldwide to think critically, analyze clues, and solve intricate word patterns. The World Cryptic Crossword Championship (WCCC) will bring this esteemed tradition to the global stage, celebrating the best crossword solvers across the globe. Launched by Extra-C, the WCCC will serve as the pinnacle of cryptic crossword competitions, offering an unparalleled platform for enthusiasts to demonstrate their skills, compete for prestigious titles, and be part of a vibrant international community.

2. The Championship Format

The WCCC will comprise an individual online championship (World Championship), open to all, on 28th June 2025 and an offline contest for team championship (World Cup) among eight country teams on 29th June 2025 in London

2.1 Individual Championship - Online Round

  • Date and Time: June 28, 2025; from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM (IST);

    Eligibility: Open to all individuals (no prior qualification required)

    • General Conditions:

    i Participants will be given two cryptic crossword grids, one at 6:30 PM (IST) and the other at 7:00 PM (IST). The Leaderboard ranks of both the online puzzles would be considered for the final rankings

    ii. Each grid must be completed within 30 minutes

    ii. Ranking Criteria: Rankings will be based on speed and accuracy

    Prizes for Individual Championship (World Champion)

    First Position: 1000 USD
    Second Position: 500 USD
    Third Position: 250 USD

    2.2 WCCC World Cup Final in London (Team event - Offline)

  • Date and Time: June 29, 2025; from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM (local time)
  • Venue: 8 South Audley Street, London, W1K 1HF

    • General Conditions:

    i. The World Cup will have a two-round format

    ii. Preliminary Round: Eight Invited Participants (one each from the participating countries), along with Challenger Participants, will first take an off-stage written preliminary round.

    iii. Final Round: The top four contestants from among the Invited and Challenger Participants from four different countries from Preliminary Round will qualify for an On-stage Finals.

    Eligibility for the World Cup (Team Championship)

    i. Invited Participants: Eight participants (one from each participating country), based on their track record, will be invited to the London Offline event

    ii. Challenger Participants: Any cruciverbalist, belonging to any nation, can take part in the offline preliminary after registering for the same online, and on the production of a valid ID proof

    iii. Special Invitations: Wildcard participants may earn invitations at the discretion of the organizers

    Prizes for Team Championship (WCCC World Cup)

    First Position: 1500 USD
    Second Position: 1000 USD
    Third Position: 500 USD

    3. Registrations

    Registration for Individual World Championship

    World Cryptic Crossword Championship (Individual) is open to anyone with a passion for crosswords. It is a global event, designed to bring together crossword enthusiasts from all corners of the world.

    How to Register: All registered participants of the ACAD Global 2025 Contest are automatically eligible for the WCCC Individual Championship and also as a Challenger Participant for World Team Championship.

    Note : No separate registration required is required for WCCC.

    3.1 Registration for Team Championship

    Invited Participants: Based on their track records, eight contestants from different countries will get an invitation to participate. They will be called Invited Participants. The decision about the Invited Participants would be the sole discretion of Extra-C and would be final and binding upon all

    Challenger Participants: Any cruciverbalist, belonging to any nation, can take part in the offline preliminary of the World Cup, after registering for the same online. The best from each country (from among the Invited and Challenger participants) would be eligible for Team Finals.
